Identity Issues

“Identity” is usually defined as a sense of oneself or a unified personality structure that is stable over time. A loss of that sense of sameness and historical continuity of one’s self, and an inability to accept a role in society and its expectations can cause what is known as an “identity crisis.” This kind of disruption in personality is often expressed by isolation, withdrawal, rebelliousness, and negativity. Younger adults and adolescents who are in the process of developing their own independent identities (separate from their parents’), can go through much turmoil in trying to “find” or define who they are and what they want in life.
