Anxiety is a symptom that can cause much personal suffering, and may be related to many different mental health diagnoses, such as panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobias and other kinds of phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress, and acute stress disorders. It is a feeling of apprehension, tension, or general uneasiness – an anticipation of danger – from an unknown or unrecognized source, usually internal or intrapsychic in origin. Anxiety is distinguished from “fear,” which is the emotional response to a consciously recognized, and usually external threat or danger in real life. Anxiety can and often does, interfere with effectiveness in living, achievement of personal goals, life satisfaction, and emotional comfort.
